TELLTALE'S END
You may have heard recently that Telltale games announced the closure of its studio, leaving only a skeleton staff to complete the Minecraft: Story Mode game for Netflix. This left many fans wondering whether the Walking Dead, which is in its final season, would be finished or if we would ever see the end of Clementine’s story?
The good news, is that it has now been confirmed that Telltales The Walking Dead season 4 will be completed by Skybound games, which is the studio behind The Walking Dead comics, written by Robert Kirkman.
So all’s well that ends well? Unless you wanted to play season 2 of the Wolf Among Us or any other of Telltales game series that is.
How could Telltale games be going out of business? From the outside everything looked great, with popular games, great stories, lots of fans and partnerships with TV shows. Well the reason for Telltales demise was given as “insurmountable challenges“.
The company’s CEO, Pete Hawley, issued a statement:
“It’s been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course. Unfortunately, we ran out of time trying to get there. We released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, but ultimately, that did not translate to sales. With a heavy heart, we watch our friends leave today to spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry.”
So in a nice way they are saying, ‘we got really successful, but nobody purchased our games, so we didn’t make enough money to carry on‘.
The reason Telltale didn’t make enough money is that they didn’t clamp down on the numerous Youtubers playing their games and uploading them in their entirety for everyone to watch. If you look at the figures for the sales of Telltale’s games they are so disproportionate compared to Youtube’s viewing figures. When you only sell 100,000 copies of your final season of The Walking Dead and yet Youtubers can get close to a million views for showing the whole episode, then something is wrong.
You may not like it but the real reason Telltale is closing, is you, that’s right you, well not all of you but most of you. If you don’t support a company and actually buy their products, then they don’t get any money and so can’t make any more products, simple. Would you expect to go to work and not get paid? The millions of selfish people watching free Youtube videos, showing full game stories, have cost Telltale their company, employees their jobs and deprived thousands of fans from future games.
So stop being a freeloader and support the gaming companies who make your favourite games, by actually buying a copy, instead of wanking off to a Youtube video.
As well as you, the blame also falls on the Youtubers and Youtube itself. Youtubers are using other peoples’ content and getting paid, what did they do to earn it? Half the time they haven’t even purchased the game. Youtube is basically just becoming a pirate site for video games just for ad revenue, they don’t care what happens to the game developers, as long as they can still put adverts on it.
If this trend continues, the gaming industry as a whole is going to fall by the wayside. Why would anyone put in the effort to make a great game for someone to just steal it and put it on Youtube for free? The games will get worse with no story, repetitive gameplay and political correctness crow barred in to everything, it will be the bear minimum. Do you really want that for your games?
