THE DARK THINGS LAY

£1.50
It's weird isn't it, how mundane creeps into your life? But oddly it's doing mundane tasks that allows your mind to think freely. Take the other day for example. I had to remove a bamboo plant that was growing from my neighbours property and springing up in the middle of my grass.

Luckily it was located in the patch I allot to wildlife, somewhere insects and creepy crawlies can live without the fear of the lawn mower. It was as I was moving a bird box that I had one of these free thinking episodes.

Here I was moving a birdhouse made from a cut down tree, a tree that no doubt supported various forms of life as it was - including birds. Don't get me wrong, the irony struck me at the time of making the birdhouse. It just made me think how weird a relationship it is between humans and the secretive world of insects. If they were sentient but chose their life style, what would they make of us and our weird ways?

It's thinking about our strange little coexistence that was the inspiration for this piece of music. I wanted to put together the mundane and what to the untrained eye seems like chaos, from the secret lives of insects and people. I recorded an atmospheric ambient sample from the very spot were the bird box lays, which has to be said is an insect palace since I left it out to weather many years ago. The track itself was created in my backroom, which looks directly out over the insects home.

I also included a fairly distinctive beat resembling a clock. The reason for this is that this track, like that thought I had, is a fleeting snapshot at those crazy little moments. I deconstruct the track in chunks as it ends, by stopping elements sharply rather than say having them blend out. This is to compliment the timer theme and also I feel that is how we stop these moments of thought - we just snap out of free thinking and back into the mundane.

I wish I had more time to just enjoy nature, just watch insects in the garden for hours on end like I did as a little boy. It always saddened me in the autumn and winter time to see all the plants and insects die off - it always made me feel slightly isolated. But that's the thing, the reality is I have just as much free time as I did when I was a child. I've burdened myself with the adult problems society say's I must have. All the little mundane things that don't matter coat your life like a sticky black tar - if you let it.

I just have to remind myself to go explore again... explore where the dark things lay.
