Portal Boots In Real Life
The boots Chell wears in Portal save here time and time again from falling great heights at break neck speeds, but could we make something like that in real life. Is It Possible?
In the video I work with some information gathered to build up a picture of whether Chell's Portal boots could exist in real life. We went over Chell's weight and the force of impact that the boots from Portal would have to take.
The results were surprising to me, but it has me asking further questions. Like, even if Portal Boots could work in real life, what would be their use? Surely they're just for someone planning on falling a great height. Maybe construction workers working on a sky scraper or maybe some extreme sport that could exist because of the Portal boots design.
Something I didn't even touch on was any forces acting on Chell's organs. The boots would not only have to protect Chell from falling while solving puzzles in GLaDOS's test chambers, but also decrease her momentum at a safe pace. Literally no point in a Portal boot that stops you from becoming a pizza on the floor, only to allow your heart to jolt itself free or even stop from the impact. Not including all your other squidgy bits inside that could burst, tear or otherwise get something where it's not supposed to be.
You might be thinking Cave Johnson wouldn't care whether a test subject lives or dies and that would be fair enough, but he does care about the Portal gun. That is after all what he's trying to protect with the Portal boots. Organ failure tends to ruin your day and can loosen your grip on an expensive Portal gun, causing it to be dropped and damaged. So there is all that to consider.
I wonder just who would be the first to test out a pair of Portal boots in real life? Its has to be a man with a death wish or a giant set of nads that trusts what some Aperture egghead has concocted, to prevent him from doing his impression of a human puddle.
If you're more into the story of Portal, you might want to watch my Portal theory video, discussing the possibility of GLaDOS being Chell's mother AND father.
