Nathan Drake

Nathan Drake's Untold Story

I have to confess to having not played Uncharted 4 and I don't have any plans to rush out and buy it, primarily because I game on the PC now. But in all honesty the whole Uncharted series wasn't a game that you just had to have as soon as it was out. More like randomly being reminded ages after it's release about it's existence, with the only allure to purchasing it being "the other one wasn't that bad".

That's the problem with Nathan Drake and Uncharted, they're both too forgettable. Not that that's a bad thing, as funny as it may sound. For me that means I can experience playing whenever I get drawn  to play it, not just pulled in by the jet engine that is AAA marketing hype. This 'not really arsed or not' attitude means I can enjoy what's on offer and sadly that's not much.
It's an action adventure that doesn't feel like you get too much action or adventure
It's an action adventure that doesn't feel like you get too much action or adventure. Uncharted is one of those games I feel got the movie to video game ratio all wrong, when trying to create a cinematic experience. Like I touched on in my GTA Theory article, GTA San Andreas made me feel like the center of events. With the gameplay pulling me in and making me feel like my actions are effecting the world Rockstar have created - whereas Uncharted seems to get that all wrong. This is the principle reason I'm not in a rush to get Uncharted 4.

Uncharted places too much emphasis on Nathan Drake's personal story, over the wonder that it would be to explore the great unknown or discover an ancient artefact. The lost civilisations and forgotten treasures feel tact onto the side of a mans mid-life crisis, as the real focus of Uncharted seems to really be digging into Nathan Drake's history.

It's actually a charming little metaphorical game of treasure hunter searching for himself, something we explored in the Nathan Drake's Untold Story video. What surprised me more is that we even got an Uncharted 4. As if your focus isn't really treasure hunting and tomb raiding, you start to turn stale pretty quickly. I am aware of Uncharted 4 showing off Drake's daughter, so maybe the developer intends on launching a spin-off with her to try capture Tomb Raider fans. Who knows....who cares?

I don't think Uncharted would get as much flak if it was marketed as a story driven game, instead of a third person action adventure platformer. Admittedly the story and human interactions would have to be better. That in my mind is why Uncharted is so forgettable, it tried to marry the lure of the action adventure with a heart warming story, when it didn't do either particularly well.

Still, the video I made on it was good.
