Games like Fallout

Games Like Fallout

Anybody who has played Fallout understands that although it's name lives on in dead horse flogging form, the spirit that was captured in the early titles is well and truly gone.

Instead of lowering our standards with what Bethesda has on offer, I'd thought I'd create a list of games like Fallout to act as a substitute.

Just to clear things up I'll be choosing games that I think are share at least some of the traits of Fallout and Fallout 2. I'll try to update this list as I go, but for now here are some suggestions.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl
S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat
S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky
The S.T.A.L.K.E.R series of games are based around a radioactive zone in Russia that is producing valuable artefacts and terrifying mutated monsters. You player as someone willing to risk their neck and head into this zone for guts and glory.

The game has factions to join and mysteries to solve as you unravel why you are there and just what an anomaly is. Set in a dark and gritty decayed re-imagining of Russia just don't enter it with a view to carrying every gun you come across_ still breaks my heart leaving weapons on dead bodies.

Borderlands
Borderlands definitely sits at the more comical end of the scale with it's story and art style. You play as a vault hunter visiting an alien planet, that has long since been abandoned by one of the universes many large corporations that control everything.

Your mission is to locate the vault and steal it's treasures, that is if you can survive the local wildlife.

Borderlands (the first one that is) is a nice little fun game with lots of variation and an interesting plot. However every game after the first release became more and more far left with regressive propaganda forced in - avoid them.

Rage
Rage is a game that blends Fallout with Borderlands but despite it's setting and theme, doesn't come over as dark or as scary as maybe it could have.

You awake in a world that has been ravaged to the point of destruction, setting society back to a bear bones existence of survival. You must uncover who you are, what caused the Earth's destruction and all the while avoiding being murdered by the gangs of crazy people who seem to take pleasure in wanton chaos.

Rage 2 is due to release but I don't know anything about that yet, looks a bit gimpy.

Metro: 2033
Metro: Last Light
The Metro series shares at least some aspects with S.T.A.L.K.E.R, as in an apocalypse set in Russia, among mutated beasts. However it sets itself apart with storytelling and feeling, delivering a game worth experiencing.

Try to alleviate your fellow survivors struggles as you navigate the dangerous Metro tunnels humanity now calls home.

Metro Exodus is due to release but I'll wait to see what they've done to it - looks good so far.

UnderRail
UnderRail is a blind recommendation in the fact I've never played it, although it's described as a 'love letter' to fans of Fallout and Fallout 2 - might be worth a try.

Wasteland 2
Wasteland 2 is the closest game on the list so far that is like the early Fallout and Fallout 2 games. Journey the wasteland as you uncover a new menace that has risen to terrify humanity.

You join the Rangers, the good guys of the apocalypse, and travel around fixing problems. You can order your party of follows about as you enter turn based battle against the scum of the wastes in an Xcom style-ish way. Level up character skills for yourself and your crew to get the best performance.

While the game offers a bit of branching (choice wise) it's not that much and lacks any wackiness at all in story line or dialogue.
